The exploration of perceptions of the urban environment

Racism has the associated context of coming from the majority population onto the oppressed, in the United States it’s perceived as the Caucasian to the various other minorities, and then again between minorities onto each other unfortunately.

When a sheltered person comes in contact with an ethnic person they have never met before they have nothing else but stereotypes to rely on. It is apparent that Ignorance has been the driving force behind comments of an offending nature. Ignorance has come in contact with a negative connotation, but it is in-fact just the absence of knowledge. In this case, Knowledge of reacting around ethnic people. In the classes I’ve been apart of at the university level I have been witness to many different ignorant accounts in relevance to the ignorance. It isn’t just a question of the culture that an ethnic person comes from but the environment they come from as well. The environment shapes the person almost as much as the cultural influence. The environment creates the growing factor of that person outside of the home. The environment is everywhere the home is not, and that is where the personality comes from. Many ethnic minorities come from similar backgrounds for the mere fact that economically speaking, they are together in the same grouping, affording the same types of neighborhoods.

When a sheltered person has come from an equally sheltered environment it has become all they know. The sheltered person will not understand the person from the unfiltered background and visa-versa.
